JOB SUMMARY:

Officiate assigned school sports (e.g., basketball, volleyball) matches in a safe, fair, and professional manner.  The position is responsible for applying and enforcing applicable rules and regulations, exercising sound judgment in making calls and managing game situations, and promoting sportsmanship and respectful conduct among students, coaches, staff, and spectators. The Sport Referee actively monitors the playing environment, addresses unsafe or inappropriate behavior, and appropriately manages and de-escalates disputes or conflicts that may arise during competition.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Officiate assigned matches and enforce official rules.
  • Make fair and consistent calls throughout each match.
  • Communicate decisions clearly and professionally with students, coaches, staff, and spectators.
  • Promote safe and appropriate conduct during matches by actively monitoring players’ behavior and consistently enforcing applicable rules and safety expectations.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and sportsmanlike environment by appropriately managing and de-escalating conflicts or disputes that arise during assigned matches, using sound judgment, effective communication, and established rules and procedures.
  • Arrive on time and fully prepared for all scheduled assignments, allowing sufficient time to review relevant schedules, rules, procedures, equipment, and assignment-specific expectations. Perform job related duties as assigned.

 

KEY COMPETENCIES, QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of official designated sport rules and officiating procedures.
  • Consistent attendance, punctuality, reliability, and impartiality.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, coaches, staff, and spectators.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick, fair decisions in a competitive environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Previous referee or officiating experience.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting).
  • Provide a clear TB test.
  • Reliable transportation is required to meet the needs of the position
  • Employees who operate a personal or company vehicle related to work location requirements must maintain, and provide Human Resources, proof of a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Rules and procedures applicable to assigned matches.
  • Basic safety practices for school athletic environments.

ABILITY TO:

  • Understand and apply applicable rules and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Remain professional and impartial during matches.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor/outdoor school athletic environment.
  • Moderate to high noise associated with matches.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Seeing and hearing to monitor match activity and communicate calls.
  • Standing, walking, and moving for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding thirty (30) pounds.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Must be available for assigned match schedules.
