THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to safely escort school children across a roadway within a marked crosswalk, and to do other work as required. Crossing Guards have responsibility for the safe crossing of school children. Crossing Guards receive necessary equipment and detailed instructions and guidance relative to traffic and crossing safety policies and procedures from appropriate District staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

  • Observes traffic flow, watching for breaks, in order to effectively halt traffic.
  • Observes that all vehicles appear to be reducing speed in preparation to stop.
  • After traffic is halted, safely escorts children across the roadway until all children have reached a place of safety from traffic and returns to crossing guard post.
  • Informs school children of proper safety methods and assures that they observe all safety precautions.
  •  When necessary, reports those students who fail to cooperate to school principal or other appropriate authority.
  • Observes and submits essential evidence (characteristics of automobile, driver, etc.) to proper authorities when motorists violate school crossing regulations.
  • Notifies or requests someone to notify proper authorities in emergency situations.
  • Observes and reports actions of suspicious characters at or near the crossing locations.
  • May be required to keep simple records and reports relative to activities, incidents, etc. at or near assigned crossing guard location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Any type or amount of education, training or experience, which would have provided the candidate with the following knowledge and abilities:

  • Knowledge of roadway safety practice; knowledge of traffic safety regulations as they apply to school crossings; knowledge of sources of emergency assistance.
  • Ability to understand roadway and traffic safety practices and regulations; ability to inform school children of proper safety methods and assure that they observe all safety precautions; ability to maintain cooperation of motorists at school crossings; ability to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to keep simple records and reports.

 

EDUCATION

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent
